Preservationist of the Year Awards
Preservation Howard County's second annual "Preservationist of the Year" awards were presented to:
Joetta Cramm - Lifetime Achievement Award
For over 30 years, Joetta Cramm has shared her knowledge of Howard County history through her tours of Ellicott City, Howard County history classes at Howard Community College, speaking engagements for community organizations, churches and public schools, and through her books, A Pictorial History of Howard County and Historic Ellicott City, A Walking Tour. Joetta has become a treasured resource and a passionate advocate for preservation of the factual history of Howard County.
Dan Wecker and Steve Wecker - Specific Preservation/Restoration Project
Through the State of Maryland's Curatorship program, Dan and Steve Wecker undertook the task of restoring the Elkridge Furnace Inn. The site was used in the 1700's and 1800's as a store for the iron furnace ventures of the Dorsey and Ellicott Families. Dan's and Steve's restoration of the buildings into one of Howard County's finest restaurants demonstrates the value of adaptive reuse of historic structures as a feasible method of preserving and maintaining historic sites. The Inn has been the venue for an annual Elkridge luncheon and historical lecture.
Clara Gouin, Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks - Historic Preservation Program
As a Senior Park Planner in the Capital Projects and Park Planning Division of Howard County Department of Recreation and Pars Clara Gouin managed the planning and development of the Patuxent Branch Trail, linking Savage and Lake Elkhorn. This project involved the restoration of the Guilford Pratt Truss Bridge, resulting in its removal from PHC's Top Ten Endangered Sites List, and the research of the Town of Guilford for the development of interpretive signs to be placed along the Trail. Clara's current project is the restoration of the Pfeiffer's Corner School House, which was recently moved to the Rockburn Heritage Park.
