The 2004 Top Ten Endangered Sites

Each year, Howard County, Maryland loses multiple historic sites due to deterioration, development and demolition. Initial estimates indicate that Howard County has lost approximately 25% of the sites listed on the Howard County Historic Sites Inventory in the last 25 years. In order to bring attention to the rapid decimation of our historic treasures, PHC has compiled its second annual list of endangered sites.

Read the article, "Endangered historical properties listed," published in The Baltimore Sun.

PHC compiled the list from public input and from evaluation of existing sites on Howard County's Historic Sites Inventory. The major criteria for selection is the degree of deterioration, possible destruction and the encroachment of development. Additional factors include diversity of geographic location and both architectural and historical representation.

PHC presents this list as a means to increase public awareness and appreciation of our nonrenewable historic and cultural resources, to garner public support and to create an effective voice for the preservation of historic and cultural sites.

If you have any historical information about any of these sites or would like to volunteer your time to help save these sites, please e-mail PHC.
