The 2006 Top Ten Endangered Sites

Each year, Preservation Howard County names 10 historic properties as "Endangered." PHC views the list as a means to garner support for the sites and to bring attention to the overall rapid loss of our historic and nonrenewable resources.

1. Doughoregan Manor
Doughogregan Manor Doughoregan Manor, a national treasure located in Howard County, was the home of Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The property is threatened by development. Read more
2. Belmont, Elkridge
Belmont, Elkridge Belmont's 18th century owners, the Dorseys, played a significant role in the economic, social, and cultural history of the Patapsco Valley. Belmont is also threatened by development. Read more
3. Woodlawn, Columbia
Woodlawn, Columbia Built in the first half of the 19th century, Woodlawn is significant because of its architecture and its former owner, Henry Howard Owings. Read more
4. Historic African American Churches

Locust Methodist
These churches, all founded in the late 1800’s, provided African Americans the opportunity to gather and worship. In addition to providing a base of power that fostered leadership opportunities and initiated political change, these churches provided important social services to their communities, including establishing schools and caring for the poor and homeless. The churches face possible demolition. Read more
5. Christ Episcopal Church
Christ Episcopal Church Built in 1727, Christ Church, the oldest Episcopal church in Howard County, is threatened by deterioration. Read more
6. Mount Hebron Barns
Mount Hebron Barns These former slave quarters are located on what was once the 21,252-acre farm of Judge Thomas Beale Dorsey, Read more
7. MonteJoy Outbuildings
MonteJoy Dating as early as 1695, the Mount Joy/Santa Fe Farm main house has been restored, but the slave quarters and a log cabin have partially collapsed. Read more
8. Brumbaugh House
Brumbaugh House The Elkridge Heritage Society, current owners, need help in restoring this late 1800's house, which housed many physicians. Read more
9. Clover Hill
Clover Hill This brick and stone farmhouse was built about 1798. Howard County's curatorship contract for adaptive use fell through and the county is seeking other opportunities for restoration. Read more
10. Clarksville Mile Marker
Clarksville Mile Marker One of the five remaining milestones in Howard County, this Clarksville milestone sits dangerously close to the road and has already been damaged by a vehicle. Read more
